Honors Option Project
I completed an honors option project for EDUC 340 to work towards my honors requirements, and focused the project on supporting students’ music literacy skills. I created bell work activities for both a middle school and high school band class that focus on literacy in written musical notation, while also being able to be played by the class since they are transposed per instrument. Below is an example of one of these worksheets, transposed for Bb instruments.
The main difficulty I ran into was that the activities were created for hypothetical students, so I didn’t know what those students needed more help with or where in a music curriculum these activities would lie. The next step in using materials such as these would be to plan when students learn each concept, with which musical repertoire, and how activities like these can create an environment of practice in those concepts.
